REPAIR VS REPLACE: THE KEY QUESTION
Aluminum gutters in Miami typically last 15 to 25 years if they are seamless and well maintained. Sectional gutters may need replacement in 10–15 years. Knowing the right signs saves you money: avoid spending on repairs that won't solve the problem, or replacing prematurely.
CLEAR SIGNS YOU NEED GUTTER REPLACEMENT
1. Multiple cracks or splits
A single crack can be sealed. But if you find cracks at multiple points along the gutter, it's a sign the material has aged uniformly — replacement is more cost-effective than patching point by point.
2. Gutter pulling away from the fascia
If the gutter is tilting, sagging or separating from the roofline at multiple sections, it usually indicates that the fascia board is moisture-damaged or the hangers are corroded. In these cases, full replacement is necessary.
3. Widespread rust or corrosion
Surface rust can be treated, but when rust has perforated the metal or covers more than 20% of the gutter, replacement is the only durable solution. This is especially common with older steel gutters.
4. Joints that keep failing
If you've sealed the same joints two or three times and they keep leaking, it's a sign the metal has lost its original shape. On older sectional gutters, this indicates it's time to upgrade to seamless gutters.
5. Peeling paint or stains on the facade
Water stains and peeling paint on the siding below the gutters indicate chronic leaks that have already damaged the structure. The sooner the gutters are replaced, the less accumulated damage.
6. Soil erosion around the foundation
If you notice trenches or erosion in the ground along your house, water is falling directly off the roof without being channeled. This can compromise the foundation over time.
SIGNS WHERE REPAIR IS STILL THE RIGHT CHOICE
- A single leaking joint (spot sealant fix)
- One section bent by a fallen branch (partial replacement)
- A clogged or disconnected downspout
- A loose or broken hanger (replace the hanger, not the whole gutter)
WHAT TO DO
If you identify two or more replacement signs, we recommend requesting a free inspection. Our technicians evaluate the actual condition of your gutters and give you an honest recommendation: repair or replace. If your gutters are over 20 years old, full replacement is almost always more cost-effective than accumulating repairs.
